Oracle Bashing IBM

I'm really starting to look forward to Sun being taken over by Oracle, especially if their current advertising battle is an indication of things to come. In the on-going battle between Oracle and IBM, comes the latest TPC-C benchmark results which pit a 9 rack Sun/Oracle T5440/F5100 configuration (TPC-C results) against IBM's monster 76 rack POWER 595 (TPC-C results). Historically Sun has ignored the TPC-C benchmark as it's not really a good indicator of real world use, however IBM hasn't, and they continue to use it. Not for much longer though. Oracle has taken them to task and given them a jolly good hiding. Continue reading ►

IBM In Talks to Buy Sun - Huh?

I was just checking the Sun share price this morning and nearly had a heart-attack. I noticed the share price had jumped significantly in pre-market trading: I glanced across to the sidebar in Google finance and it's awash with stories about IBM being in talks to buy Sun Microsystems. They all reference the same Wall Street Journal article - IBM in Talks to Buy Sun in Bid to Add to Web Heft. To say I'm surprised is an understatement of note. Continue reading ►

IBM To Distribute Solaris

Today... IBM and Sun announced that IBM will distribute the Solaris operating system (OS) and Solaris Subscriptions for select x86-based IBM System x servers and Blade Center servers. Now that's got to be an indication of how good Solaris 10 is, and how much demand it's getting now. This agreement has just effectively opened up Sun's customer base to the entire IBM customer base. Brilliant!! Now if only Sun had kept up the development on the PowerPC support in Solaris. IBM may have (in my wildest dreams) extended this agreement to their PowerPC systems too. Now that would have been cool.

DARPA Carelessly Hands out Cash to IBM & Cray

I was a little surprised and saddened to read that DARPA has decided to pump US$250m into Cray and US$244m in IBM for them to work on DARPA's next high performance computing initiative - their "Petascale" program. There was a lot of bidding and vying for the investment and it came down to 3 final contenders - IBM, Cray and Sun. Now being a Sunny, you can understand my disappointment - had Sun got some of this cash, I may have got a pay rise. That aside, I'm surprised DARPA made their decision based on the idea's pitched.
