Links of interest for 5 Nov 2009 - 2 Dec 2009: J is for JVM: Why the ‘J’ in JRuby? | Engine Yard Blog - A good explanation on why the guys behind jRuby like the J, aka Java Virtual Machine, part of JRuby. Interesting performance figures too when compared to the standard Ruby, especially considering people complain Java is slow. Senators press EU to speed its Oracle-Sun probe - I very much doubt this is going to have any effect on the EU regulators. They'll just perform the usual Gallic shrug and ignore the letter. Links of interest for 12 Dec 2008 - 24 Dec 2008: Sun boosts OpenSolaris on Atom - Oooo. When this becomes a reality without any hoop jumping, I may just have to get myself a small Atom based netbook. It's recession time and Sun has the best recession kool aid. - Who needs Oracle and BEA when you can have MySQL and Glassfish, and you can even use Ruby on Rails. I agree with the final comment in the article - Sun just isn#039;t selling the whole idea very well. I hope someone sees this post and takes it#039;s content... Continue reading ►

On the Road to Ruby on Rails

Wow!!! I'm totally blown away. After installing Ruby, Rails, Mongrel & MySQL yesterday, I've just followed this simple tutorial and created by first Ruby on Rails application. I must have been sleeping under a rock for quite some time as I've certainly been missing out on something awesome. I'll be putting my PHP development on the back burner for a while - I've got me a... Continue reading ►

So far, I've installed Ruby, Rails, Mongrel and MySQL successfully following the instructions kindly linked off the Ruby on Rails page. I only encountered one problem along the way in the form of the following error when I attempted to install Rails: $ sudo gem install rails --include-dependencies Bulk updating Gem source index for: http://gems.rubyforge.org ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::GemNotFoundException) Could not find rails (> 0) in any repository $ A quick search on ... Continue reading ►

Links of interest for 9 May 2007 - 13 May 2007: About Project Indiana - Oooo, so that's what Project Indiana is all about. Pity we heard about it from the press first. That said, it sounds like Ian's got his head screwed on right and this'll really drive OpenSolaris adoption. Experts scramble to quash IPv6 flaw - Ooops. A slight over sight here. Sun hopes for Linux-like Solaris - Not the most accurate of articles, but it does raise a valid point. DTrace for Ruby is Available - Cool!! I can see Ruby evolving and improving dramatically now.
